The Common Core and the Developmentally Appropriate Practice
The common core and the Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) can co-exist because both of them provide standards regarding childhood education. The common core focuses on two areas: mathematics and the English language arts. Various standards have been developed regarding early childhood learning to enhance the learning process in different aspects. Among such aspects are mathematics, English, cognitive and physical capabilities. The common core standards only focus on two areas, which is considered a limitation in the current school system. Children have a lot to learn, especially in developing their cognitive skills. Therefore, it is ideal for the common core to co-exist with the DAP because both of them provide all the standards needed to ensure a child develops well in all the necessary areas.
The common core can co-exist with DAP because DAP focuses on the development of a child across various areas such as physical and cognitive aspects. DAP refers to an approach used to teach young children from infancy to third grade. The approach requires the educators to meet the children and get to know them. This process enables the educator to reach the challenging goals of the students and facilitate their achievement. At this age, children have not developed a lot of cognitive skills. Therefore, the teaching practices used ought to be appropriate for the child at that specific age. The practices should also match the child’s developmental status and cultural and social contexts in which the child lives. The practice focuses on ensuring that goals are challenging enough to facilitate the progress and development of the child’s interests.
