Stress among Children in Military Deployed Families
A population ranging between 2 to 3million people in the United States have their parents deployed to either Afghanistan or Iraq. The departing of these parents affects their family members and especially children significantly. Young children are negatively affected because they are physically and emotionally dependent on their parents. Also, brain developments are easily disrupted even by mere aspects of stress, not to mention the significant levels of staying away from their parents for long periods such as four years. The high stress and trauma levels affect the children and may not change towards recovery even after their parents return. Notably, most military families have little or no access to the support needed to help their children through a quick recovery process from stress and trauma. They require providers' help to increase their resilience to adjust and readjust to the deployment and post-deployment periods. The cumulative stress on children from military deployed families changes the brain process that should regulate their behaviors, putting their mental, physical and emotional health at high risks of damage.
Military deployment hurts the quality of relationships between children and their parents at young ages, resulting in negative impacts on both parties. While both the parents and children are affected, the significant detriment affects children because they cannot control their behaviors. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (2019) shows that parenting in non-deployed parents suffers due to high-stress levels. The stress is directly iterated on the children as the parents reach overload and cannot handle their families as desired. Thus, the children are prone to the risk of neglect or abuse (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2019). The occurrence of these events yields cumulative stress on children, hurting their health significantly. On the other hand, the military personnel has the risk of developing issues such as depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injury considering the deployment, hardships in the engagement, and the idea of being away from their families (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2019). The problems change them, and they return home as entirely different people. Their children feel the first and most significant impact since they have to stay close and start bonding with their parents again. These children must inherently learn to live by a parent changed by war, and the idea may not be easy for them (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2019). Both the deployment and post-deployment periods negatively affect military children, putting them at risk of stress that could significantly hurt their health.
However, there are substantial benefits for military families. Although they may depart from each other for an extended period of stress, they gain various advantages. According to Betts (n.d.), military people and their families can access health and different insurance t...
