Zama
Zama was born in South America, but he was desperate for Spain to transfer him away from this remote colony. From the beginning of the film, it can be seen that Zama has been wandering by the sea, seemingly waiting for news from Spain. But the idea is always far from reality, and he has to take part in an adventure to attract the attention of the authorities. In this film, many elements are presented, such as aboriginal identity and identity contradictions. The film uses special sound design, narrative structure methods, and animal perspectives to express Zama's confusion during the waiting process.
Martel puts a lot of emphasis on the presence of Indigenous identity. She aims to present Indigenous people differently because she felt that history was written by the victors, which was unfair.(Gemünden, 2018, p38). The film depicts Vicuña Porto to be the villain who robs and rapes people at his pleasure. However, these are just rumors by the local people. Zama is uninterested in the rumors, and instead chooses to pursue Luciana a married Spanish noblewoman who is uninterested in him (UCLA Film & Television Archive, 2019)
Further, "Zama" film depicts a colonial history, the contradiction of individual identity rises to the contradiction of national identity ". Zama desperately wants to gain the identity of his mother country. His assistant Ventura's irritating remarks in the film are precise because he is surprised by the number of Americans who want to pass off as Spaniards. This longing for Europe was also reflected in Zama's conversation with the Chancellor's wife. When Zama fantasized about Russian winters and fur coats, the chancellor's wife said that those who had never been in Europe remembered Europe best. As a country where European immigrants make up the majority of the population, Argentina has always had a difficult time securing its place in Latin America. Martel sees this as a ridiculous nationalistic identity or the trap of identity.
