Franz Kafka's book The Metamorphosis plays a vital role in demonstrating the role of work as a shaper of identity. Most of the time, people tend to rely on their work to find their identities. Other people will also like to know the kind of work you do so they can imagine and create some kind of identity for you. In Kafka's book, it is evident that Gregory depended on work as one of the aspects that would help identify his identity. The following discussion will discuss how work can be used as a shaper of identity.
At the beginning of Kafka's book, Gregory is depicted as a person with a clear identity. Gregory was employed as a salesperson, and it made him a responsible person. Gregory had become the breadwinner of his family by helping his father provide food for the family since his father was bankrupt. According to the book, most of his family members did not work when Gregory could work, including his father and mother.
However, Gregory begins to lose his identity when Metamorphosis into an insect, meaning that he is not in a position to continue working anymore (Kafka 1). The inability to continue working rendered him useless because he had now become dependent on the family he was supporting. Since Gregory could not work, he became a burden making everyone turn against him. His father treated him so harshly would, at times, haul items on him, hurting him.
