Case Study Instructions:
Instructions Consider yourself as a future counsellor as you write your paper. Address your thoughts on 3 (three) selected topics. Each topic should be used as headings with a number of the topic and the title at the centre of your page, which is given in bold print below. A minimum of 1-2 references (need to have been published in the last 5-7 years) for each topic. Each topic is limited to 1 page (double spaced). Please use the Assignment Template for RC#1. In developing your ideas, use clear examples to illustrate your point. Tie your examples into the point you are making -- but avoid giving too many details or getting lost in the personal example. Draw upon examples, and apply ethical principles to practical work settings. [Include listed articles from the Code of Ethics/Standards of Practice in your responses]. SELECT 3 (THREE) TOPICS from the following: 1. Dealing with a Value Conflict. Identify one specific value you are likely to push or promote or an area where you expect to struggle because of a value conflict with a given client or a given value system. Or, identify one of your core values and show how this value could either enhance or inhibit the effectiveness of counselling. Demonstrate how you might proceed to lessen the chances that you would impose your values on this client. How might you resolve a value conflict and use a referral as a last option? 2. Competence. What does it mean to you to be a competent professional? How will you assess your competence? How will you maintain your competence? 3. Informed Consent. After reading the required material on informed consent, write an essay describing how you would apply the informed consent process with your clients. What aspects would you emphasize at the initial meeting? How would you address informed consent as an ongoing process with your clients? 4. Confidentiality. Create a brief scenario and identify the Canadian context's salient ethical and legal issues in relation to confidentiality. Assume you are counselling a client that you have serious concerns about either danger to self (suicidal person) or danger to other (violent person). Discuss what you would do (giving your rationale) in the scenario you present. 5. Boundary Issues in Counseling. Based on the course's required material (Code of Ethics/Standards of Practice), formulate your position on what constitutes appropriate boundaries in the therapy relationship. What is your position on dual and multiple relationships? Write your guidelines for how you will establish clear and appropriate boundaries with clients. Structure Required components: Title page, and Reference page. The title page includes the following elements: Page number, Paper title, Author, Author Affiliation, Course, Instructor, and Due Date. The paper should be double-spaced throughout (without leaving an extra space between paragraphs or references). Headings - the topic number and the title at the centre of the page. The requirement in each assignment is to use the CCPA Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice as required material in the course. In addition, in assignment #1, you need to add 1-2 references from peer review journals or professional publications. References have to be published in the last 5-7 years. Each topic is limited to 1 page. Format: Please, format your assignment in Word (files with extension .doc or .docx), Times New Roman font size: 12. Specific Requirements No abstract, introduction or conclusion sections are needed for the assignment. There is no need to apply steps of the ethical decision-making model in this assignment. You can write in the first person. Use the following formula for saving your assignments: First Name Last Name -Course Number-Assignment Number (JohnDoe-PSYC6203-1). Important: When analyzing cases in the ethical course, do not focus on any specific clinical treatment and intervention options (i.e., evaluate the effectiveness of treatment interventions). You only focus on the ethical justification behind the hypothetical counsellor's actions/decisions.

Reflection Cases First Name and Last Name Name of School, Name of University Course Code: Course Name Dr. Jane Doe Month Day, Year 1. Dealing with a Value Conflict. My core value during counselling is the ability to show empathy in all sessions with my clients. Empathy enhances the effectiveness of my counselling sessions in two major ways. Understanding and sharing the feelings of another facilitates the creation of a safe and supportive environment where clients feel heard, understood, and validated (Wampold & Flückiger, 2023). Empathy also helps me to build rapport with my clients easily because the connection is essential for the client's willingness to share their experiences, emotions, and challenges, which creates a foundation for meaningful therapeutic work. However, empathy also inhibits the effectiveness of counselling if not utilized with caution (Betzler et al., 2019). An excessively empathetic counsellor may find it difficult to maintain ethical and necessary professional boundaries, which has the potential to cause emotional exhaustion. Counselling sessions where there is excessive empathy from the professional often tend to impose values on the client. In such a situation, I will lessen the chances of imposing my values on the client by conducting self-reflection, supervision, and consultation and assessing my cultural competence (Wampold & Flückiger, 2023). When conflicts arose, I prioritized client monotony and respected their right to make decisions that aligned with their values, even if they differed from my empathetic understanding. A client-centered counselling session is the best approach to obtaining positive results in the client’s recovery journey (Moudatsou et al., 2020). However, some value conflicts may go beyond my control and hence need colleague input or different therapeutic approaches that align with the client’s needs. If this significant conflict persists and it is evident that my empathetic approach is not conducive to the client’s progress, I will consider referral as the last option. I will communicate the decision to the client and collaborate with the referral source to ensure a smooth transition for the client. 2. Competence. Competence means possessing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are necessary to perform professional duties effectively and ethically. It constitutes a commitment to continuous learning, adapting to evolving principles, and always delivering quality services that meet the needs of clients or stakeholders. To assess my competence as a counsellor, I will have to carry out both self-evaluation and external evaluation. Self-evaluation involves reflecting on experiences, identifying strengths and areas for improvement, and setting professional deve...
