The illumination conditions within medical settings, particularly within hospital environments, profoundly influence the well-being of patients and healthcare professionals. Cutting-edge research has recently illuminated that even a seemingly straightforward alteration in ambient lighting, such as the attenuation of blue light during evening hours, can yield substantial enhancements in the quality of sleep and the alignment of circadian rhythms. The degree of compliance with these standards among healthcare institutions displays a striking spectrum, with many establishments falling short of the prescribed criteria, primarily attributable to a need for more awareness (Cain & Phillips, 2021; Garg et al., 2016). This preliminary literature review investigates the significance of proper lighting in medical facilities and its benefits for the medical staff and patients.
Based on the literature review done by Verderber et al. (2021) on the intensive care unit environments from 2005 to 2020, there is an evolving landscape of healthcare design, with lighting emerging as a pivotal element in enhancing patient care, staff well-being, and sustainability considerations. Due to this, some hospitals experimented with the systematic and timely use of lighting in the hospital setting and evaluated its effects on the stakeholders. An example of this is Schledermann et al.’s (2023) investigation on circadian lighting systems versus pre-existing lighting, which revealed that the former had a statistically significant increase in overall satisfaction levels among respondents compared to the latter.
Dalke et al. (2006) examined the significance of ambiance (i.e., color and design) of hospital settings to the welfare of the healthcare workers and the patients. The study revealed that although ambiance cannot treat diseases, it promotes a positive sense of well-being for both patients and healthcare workers.
