Existentialism seeks to explain the existence of an individual as his own free will and is responsible for their development through willingly acts of human nature. Human beings are anxious about their freedom because they know that they are in charge of their actions.
In this particular case, Brittany Maynard decided to end her life when the doctors confirmed that she was suffering from stage four glioblastoma, brain cancer and that she had six months to live. Even with multiple treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy, it did not make sense to her since she would still suffer the side effects of those treatments. Her existentialism decision relates to the following theories as follows;
Ontological Anxiety
Human beings are threatened with the possibility of death and failure to fulfill their purpose in the world, and failure to accept the unavoidable results can cause anxiety. When Brittany was diagnosed with cancer, she was anxious that the illness would deteriorate her life quality and wrote to people about how she was planning to end her life under the death with dignity act.
Ontological Guilt
Maynard faces the Eigenwelt type of ontological guilt associated with failure to utilize their potential for self-awareness fully. Maynard knew the world was a beautiful place to travel and that her illness would deny her so many opportunities.
