Intoxication is the main problem that is affecting most of the homeless people in America. It is characterized by substance abuse such as alcohol and other related drugs. Homeless alcoholism can be described as an addiction characterized by stress (American Addiction Center, 2021). The goal of this paper is to evaluate and compare the influence of substance use on homeless people.

As discussed, intoxication is substance abuse, and it is meant to combat stress and other related problems. On the other hand, substance-induced psychosis is the after-effects of withdrawing from drugs (Carrol, 2020). In this case, a person will have hallucinations and severe health problems that can lead to death if they are not attended to effectively. This particular study will focus on a homeless man in Philadelphia (Name undisclosed). He has been in the streets for more than 6 years and has become a drug addict. Unfortunately, he has been using all kinds of drugs that come on the way to relieve stress. The background is quite extensive and frustrating at the same time. He had a good family and job for ten years, and then he lost it all in one month. It started with the job where he was fired for no apparent reason. After the notice, he could not provide for the family, and out of the reason, his wife and children relocated elsewhere.
Furthermore, he also tried to get in touch with the family through the court, but it did not work. These are the main challenges that pushed him to drugs. Primarily, people will engage in drug use due to stress, and most of the issues are sourced from families. Most people in the streets are broken families, child abuse, and poor parenting (Mangal, 2008). Intoxication is a fatal health issue that can lead to death after prolonged use. In this case, continuous use of drugs leads to an imbalance in body pressures, leading to diabetes and high blood pressure. Most people who go for rehabilitation are prone to blood pressure (Carrol, 2020). Sometimes the use of alcohol leads to irregular heartbeats, resulting in cardiac arrest.
The homeless man has used alcohol for a long time, and he does it daily. Some of the symptoms of long-term drug use reflected in the man include a slurred talk and walking problems. Additionally, he has a bandage and other patched areas, and it seems he took a fall or fought with someone. Some behaviors characterized by intoxicated people include violence and harm to self (Jung & Namkoong, 2014). Most addicts are always on the streets fighting. It is a process of releasing anger due to the loss of family and job. It is traumatizing to lose everything you have worked for, which leads to substance abuse.
