Whether working as a project manager or office supervisor, leadership requires some soft skills that enable those in leadership interact effectively with workers and team members. People who are in leadership roles need to have a way of connecting with others to ensure that they can move the organization forward (Patel, 2012). After studying the case of Christine, it is clear that leadership is something that can be identified even among the unexpected individuals. Christine is guided by the leadership strengths of self-determination, strategic planning, relationship building, creativity, compassion, influencing, and she can use the strength of delegating and confidence to overcome her weaknesses.
The experiences in Christine’s background that helped develop her strengths is determination to succeed despite coming from a poor background. Christine did not wallow in self-pity just because she came from low socioeconomic status. While still in high school, she started working in local restaurant doing things such as dish washing or waitressing. Her focus was not to give up but focused on developing and bettering herself. She knew that she would need this money as she aspired to go to college. When it was time to go to college, she continued to work in these jobs and this helped shape her strengths. One strength she developed is responsibility because she could work while continuing with her studies. She also developed the strength of thinking ahead in the way she recognized that this job helped shape her future career goals and focus. Her background also shows that she developed the strength of determination because she did not give up even in the face of hardships (Patel, 2012).
One strength evident in Christine’s work is strategic planning. Christine was successful in program development by helping come up with ways of implementing community resources to reach those that were often overlooked. This shows that as a strategic planner, Christine developed a vision for the future of her organization to utilize resources effectively (Patel, 2012). The strength of creativity is evident in her work especially in regards to developing programs that positively impact others. For example, the Study Buddies helped children find tutors for guidance both academically and extracurricular activities. She also developed Girl Power allowing female students interact with career women to gain knowledge and skills in various fields.
