1. What are the typical qualities exhibited by a good leader? Name a good leader and describe why you feel they are effective.
Good leaders steer an organization in the right direction. The primary qualities of an effective leader include proper interpersonal communication skills, empathetic, honesty, an active listener, and innovative and creative. If a leader is a good listener and communicator, it means that the individual does not run away from upcoming challenges but addresses them immediately they occur. Honesty and empathy make a person the best in solving workers’ conflicts. An innovative and creative leader propels an organization’s growth and expansion since he or she make good strategic decisions. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive officer, is an effective leader since he always listens to his employees and has continually maintained the growth index of the company despite the challenges he comes across.
2. How did Director James Lee Witt’s “Customer Focus” improve the way FEMA operated?
The “Customer Focus” initiative by Director James Lee Witt enabled the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to build a positive reputation. In particular, it increased the communication between FEMA staff and other relevant stakeholders. On that note, FEMA was successful in many of its initiatives in mitigating disasters. Director Witt improved communications by holding regular meetings with senior managers who were required to communicate with other staff regularly. He published a weekly newsletter to update FEMA employees about agency activities and held numerous media briefings, particularly when a disaster occurred. Witt also communicated with other relevant stakeholders, such as mayors, governors, and Congress. Overall, “Customer Focus” ensured that junior employees, managers, and the public were on the same page, which united them in addressing various disasters.
