Anemia is characterized by a deficiency in red blood cells or hemoglobin, which is the iron-containing oxygen-transport mellaprotein in humans and other vertebrates CITATION Placeholder3 \l 1033 (Cassata, n.d.). Heme is the component of hemoglobin that gives color to the blood. Anemia is a common disease that affects all ages, gender, ethnicities, and race. There are different types of anemia, all of which have different signs, symptoms, risk factors, and pathophysiology.
Based on the case presented, Ms. A, a 26-year-old white woman, has an iron deficiency anemia, a type of microcytic hypochromic anemia. Red blood cells that have smaller have a condition called as microcytosis. On the other hand, hypochromic refers to the decrease in the redness of the red blood cells CITATION Unind5 \l 1033 (Univerity of California - San Francisco, n.d.).
The following are the reasons to rule-in microcytic hypochromic anemia secondary to iron deficiency based on Ms. A's subjective report: 1) Ms. A is a woman and women are more likely to get the condition than men. 2) Ms. A has a white, pale skin which is also indicative of anemia 3) Ms. A presents shortness of breath, dizziness, and fatigue which increase in intensity during menses. During every menstrual period, a woman loses a large volume of blood which in turn decreases the number of red blood cells in a woman's circulatory system. Shortness of breath and dizziness result from the decreased oxygen supply due to the decrease in red blood cells. Oxygen is needed by the cells in aerobic respiration to produce more adenosine triphosphate or ATP, which is the energy currency of the body.
