In this quiz I scored six out of the possible twenty three points. This was poor performance and contrary to my expectations. I can attribute my poor performance to little understanding of quality and culture and interference by my cultural beliefs. After going through the provider’s guide to quality and culture I will have sufficient knowledge of what quality and culture. Questions that I answered incorrectly included question 1, 2 ,4 ,5 ,6,8 ,9 10 ,12 ,13 ,14 ,15, 17 ,18 ,21 ,22 ,23 while those that I answered correctly were questions 3 ,7 ,11 ,16 ,19, 20.
Discussion
Low levels of cultural competence triggers provider to order contraindicated medication, reduces the rate at which the patient adheres to recommendations which impedes the process of making accurate diagnosis. Factors such as cultural and language barrier hinders patients from understanding the questions and this makes them reluctant in telling their symptoms, the provider in this case misunderstands the descriptions regarding the symptoms by the patient ( Staton 1989) A meticulous provider need not to allow prejudices which may impede accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan .Questions that demand yes or no answer normally limits the ability of the patient to reveal full information that crucial for correct diagnosis (Anderson 1984) .To ensure that the patient provides sufficient information the provider needs to combine both open ended questions and the direct ones .The provider should try not to be judgmental regarding differences that exists in beliefs but should focus on building trust in their medical advice and gathering as much medical history and symptoms which will be crucial in accurate diagnosis. It is critical to treat the patient with respect without and frankly discussing health beliefs differences without taking sides. The provider needs to ask about cultural and psychological factors that may hamper adherence to the recommendations besides exploring payment options with the patient.
