Ms. A. is an apparently healthy 26-year-old white woman. Since the beginning of the current golf season, Ms. A has noted increased shortness of breath and low levels of energy and enthusiasm. These symptoms seem worse during her menses. Today, while playing in a golf tournament at a high, mountainous course, she became light-headed and was taken by her golfing partner to the emergency clinic. The attending physician's notes indicated a temperature of 98 degrees F, an elevated heart rate and respiratory rate, and low blood pressure. Ms. A states, “Menorrhagia and dysmenorrheal have been a problem for 10-12 years, and I take 1,000 mg of aspirin every 3 to 4 hours for 6 days during menstruation.” During the summer months, while playing golf, she also takes aspirin to avoid “stiffness in my joints.”
Laboratory values are as follows:

In this case, the sample provided reveals a lot about the blood and its composition. This is, therefore, a likely test for anemia. Combined with the patient’s symptoms, much can be concluded accurately. It is likely that Mrs. A is suffering from Iron Deficiency Anemia due to a number of reasons.
Discussion
From the information provided both through the samples and the symptoms being displayed by Mrs. A., it is very likely that she is suffering from iron deficiency anemia. This type of anemia is usually brought about by a general lack or insufficiency in the amounts of iron and vitamin B12 in the blood. It is worth noting that, Mrs. A is 26 years, therefore, the chances of her suffering from other forms of anemia are very low. This automatically rules out all the other kinds of anemia. The evidence of IDA is further strengthened by the fact that her anemic conditions get worse during her menstrual cycle (Gittings, Brogdon & Cornelus, 2013). It is clear that she loses a substantial amount of blood during such times, along with the vitamins and the iron minerals.
She uses aspirin regularly throughout her menses. This might be a pointer to gastrointestinal bleeding. Still, it is evidence of loss of blood. From the interpretation of the data provided, the value of her hematocrit indicates 32%. This is very low, compared to normal standards, hence an indication of anemia. The same applies to the readings of her erythrocyte and reticulocyte counts, which stand at 3.1*10mm and 1.5% respectively. These are very low, and are indicators of anemia.
