The cross-cultural healthcare is very significant in the contemporary world especially because of the issue of globalization. It is vital that nurses and other physicians learn to communicate effectively and provide adequate care to different individuals from diverse races. Sensitivity should be emphasized to avoid offenses during communication and when providing care to such people (American Geriatrics Society, 2004). One of the main purposes of practicing cross-cultural healthcare is to enhance healthcare in communities which face cultural and language barriers when receiving healthcare. There are two video clips that help to evaluate on good and bad cross-cultural communication.
The healthcare provider from the video clips demonstrates good communication skills during the conversation with the male Chinese patient. The physician begins with welcoming greetings to patient and introduces herself with enthusiasm. The conversation takes off and flows very well, with the physician making enquiries of the problem with the patient, while on the other hand allowing him to give views regarding the Chinese traditional medication that he had been receiving (University of Michigan, 2010). In addition, the physician also encourages self-enclosure of the patient by asking him about his perspectives about his condition and the likely causes. Moreover, she seems more interested to know about the patient’s cultural medication rather than dismissing the idea. Actually, the physician demonstrates acceptance of most of the patient’s view on the problem of bleeding gums and even recommends the continuation of this medication with incorporation other prescriptions.
