Dr. Smith is an orthopedic surgeon working at your facility, he is known as someone who doesn't tolerate delays in his schedule, can be very rude, does not appreciate being questioned by others and lacks a warm bedside manner.
Mrs. Gonzalez speaks limited English, requiring a language translator for communication between care providers and herself. She is scheduled for a right hip replacement this morning and has had all her labs completed and resulted, has not eaten anything since midnight the night before. She has not been consented for her surgery and she indicates to you that she has some questions about the surgery and care afterwards. You advise her that when Dr. Smith comes in, you will advise him of her questions so he can answer them.
Dr. Smith comes in early in the morning and you notice he is in a rush. He tells you he has many surgeriess scheduled today and needs to get started. You try to inform him that Mrs. Gonzalez has questions and he abruptly tells you, "just bring her into the OR and I will talk to her in there."
Dr. Smith begins to explain the surgery to the patient and you can tell that Mrs. Gonzalez is not understanding everything he is saying.
Dr. Smith then writes "Left hip replacement" on the consent form and asks Mrs. Gonzalez to sign the form.
