Conflict Handling in Healthcare
Conflict occurs when two or more parties who would generally be on good terms fail to do so and risks causing harm (Piryani, R. et al., 2019). Health care involves collaboration from different career men and women, including medical and non-medical personnel; this makes conflict inevitable. Conflict in healthcare may include a member of the healthcare team disagreeing amongst themselves or between patients and their caregivers (Lipcamon, J. et al., 2014). Conflict among members can lead to many undesirable effects like lack of morale and confidence, which may affect the outcome of their patients or clients. Since it is hard to avoid conflict, compelling conflict-handling styles should be learned and exercised in the health system (Nancy, B. & Katherine, M. 2020). Luckily, according to OBHC, 2009, there are five conflict-handling modes: avoidance, accommodation, collaboration, competition, and compromise. The work below discusses how different methods can be used to solve a conflict in different scenarios.
Scenario one
The radiologist could employ the collaborative approach to resolve the conflict they have with the internist. Bearing in mind that these two need to continue to work together and that the lives of their patients can be affected if they two disagree, the radiologist can ask the internist to lower their voice and proceed to have a private conversation. While conversing, the radiologist could apologize and explain to the internist that it was wrong to delay informing them about the patient's probable diagnosis. They could also explain to them that the communication was not clear on the urgency of the report. The internist will feel good that the radiologist apologized, and there will be better inter-department communication moving forward.
Scenario two
Bearing in mind that the allegations are not true, the female physician should use competing to take her stand. She should let the division chief know that she is neither racist nor an obstruction in any way.
