CLIN DCS30 – Online Clinical Placement 1

Assignment 1 – Literature Review/Case Report

Learning Outcomes:

The student will be able to;

  1. Critically evaluate a published case report

  2. Review additional literature to support case report

  3. Practice effective written communication

  4. Prepare a plan for future case report submission

Assignment Overview:

This is an individual assignment.

During your clinical placement, you will be required to complete, present and submit a case report.  In order to plan and prepare for your work on your future clinical placement case report, this assignment will allow you to critically review and evaluate a current published case report.  Through the critical review of a chosen case report, you will formulate a plan on how you will go about documenting your case report during your clinical placement.  This assignment is to be done in essay format (750-1000 words max) and should include APA referencing of your article and any other supporting articles.

Method:

Select a case report from either the Journal of American Society of Echocardiography (JASE) or the Canadian Journal of Medical Sonographer (CJMS) that is current within the past 10 years.  Online access to the CJMS can be found on the Sonography Canada website (login required) and online access to JASE is available via the DCS libguides.  See below images as a guide (you can search JASE for ‘case report’ to get several published case reports)

These types of articles (case reports) are generally only 3-5 pages long and easy to read.

In your own words, discuss the following in essay format;

  • A brief introduction to the case report topic and why this topic was chosen

  • Briefly describe the pathology and/or procedure being discussed (this may require a bit of study and reading)

  • Using the CJMS Case Report Checklist as a guide (provided) and the CJMS Authors Manual

(provided), critically review the case report and answer the following questions;

  1. Has the author provided a brief explanation justifying the importance of reporting the case?

  2. Is enough information provided for the reader to clearly understand the pathology and/or procedure being discussed?

  3. Does the case report explain the significance of all the results provided or review pertinent information through discussion and links to other relevant literature?

  4. Is there anything missing from this published case report?

  • Perform a literature search.  Are there any other similar cases published?  How are they similar?

  • Describe what you learned by critically evaluating the case report, and how you plan to go about creating your case report and presentation during CP2. Have a look at the CP2 Case Review presentation overview. Outline your plan for CP2.

Echocardiography Case Report
Abstract
Echocardiography refers to the test that physicians perform on patients to monitor their hearts and see whether they are functioning well. During this time that the world is fighting against coronavirus, it is vital to know and eliminate things that might increase the likelihood of individuals succumbing to the disease. Picard and Weiner focus on the effects of COVID-19 on patients with heart complications. The authors found out that people with cardiac diseases have a high risk of dying when infected by the coronavirus. That is the reason why they emphasize the importance of echocardiography in managing coronavirus patients who are severely sick. The paper depicts the significance of echocardiography in monitoring COVID-19 infected people with heart complications.
Keywords
Echocardiography, coronavirus pandemic, cardiovascular disease, cardiac failure, hypoxemia, and cardiomyopathy.
Introduction
Currently, the entire world is fighting against a highly contagious disease known as COVID-19 that originated from Wuhan, China. The rising rate of infections in different countries continues to strain the healthcare systems. The report focuses on three primary cases from Wuhan that illustrate how coronavirus affects individuals with preexisting cardiovascular disease. Although COVID-19 is a new type of virus that has not been explored deeply, physicians are still learning how the illness influences the heart. For instance, many hospitalized patients have been found to experience cardiac failure. The primary reason for choosing this article is to understand how coronavirus is affecting patients with cardiac diseases. For this reason, by understanding the effects of COVID-19 on echocardiography, doctors will be able to help infected patients who have cardiac diseases.
Case Description
As doctors continue to study how coronavirus affects people with cardiac diseases, one of the most critical things they have found out is that such individuals are at high risk. The pathology of COVID-19 makes the disease difficult to cure and control its spread. For instance, one of the major causes of the illness is the contact with infected individuals or surfaces that have been touched by patients who have tested positive for the virus. Coronavirus has the potential of causing cardiomyopathy due to the toxic substances of cytokines that are produced when the body is trying to fight against the virus.
Michael Picard and Rory Weiner have given a brief explanation that shows the significance of reporting the case of how coronavirus affects people with cardiac diseases. Specifically, the authors assert that patients with preexisting heart complications, coronary artery disease, or heart failure are transformed from a stable to unstable state when infected by the coronavirus. Hypoxemia is exacerbated by COVID-19, which means that physicians must be careful when treating people with cardiac illnesses if they have been affected by the coronavirus (Picard & Weiner, 2020). Moreover, viral infection increases the chances of individuals developing cardiac abnormalities. Picard and Weiner have justified that ...
