The Response to Intervention Model

Case Study Instructions:

The purpose of this assignment is for you to think about and develop an intervention plan can be implemented for the student described in your case study. (Please see the attachment, particular the background of this fifth-grade student, who has reading difficulties), pease go through the case study, this assignment is based on the case study.
NOte***** When you find program information, please find GRADE 5 materials and curriculum.
You will write an intervention plan (5 pages double spaced) that must includes the following 6 section, please heading each section:
 1. Clear description of the focus on the intervention (what skill(s) is the intervention targeting and why)
-the rational you chose this specific skill (I chose the Decoding skills, you should only focus on this skill, “Decoding is the process by which a word is broken into individual phonemes and recognized based on those phonemes. ... trouble sounding out words and recognizing words out of context. confusion between letters and the sounds they represent. The rationale could the background description “slow oral reading rate”. Decoding is one of important skills of reading development. In the case study, this child is left behind his peers and did not meet the crtitria of grade 5 standard an so on, make connection to the case study..(half page)
2. Student goal(s)…
-Only focus on the goals of decoding skills! Please find out the standard of same age-group students with VALID and RELIABLE data of this age group peers. Goal could be "Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.” “Use combined knowledge of all letter- sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.” Please see the attachment. (one page)
3. Discuss whether the goal is achievable
-I chose the program called “Reading Mastery Signature Edition”, you could find some relevant articles in testing this program. Please briefly introduce this program on reading aspect (decoding skills). You could talk about the effectiveness of this program on TARGRTING Decoding skills in reading in FIFTH GRADE.
You could talk about the goal of developing decoding skills is realistic and attainable since…(e.g. easy for classroom teacher to implement, the program has teacher guide and assessment, provides student martial and so on…(one page)
4 Instructional decisions (what will the intervention consist of, who will deliver it, when and where will the intervention take place)
explain the intervention consist of what exactly decoding skills, such as phonemes, Word Introduction, or Word Building(see the attachment sample lesson), letter- sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes, Please FIND exactly lesson of this program on decoding,
The classroom teacher will deliver, give reasons
When: small group instruction on each Monday for one term with regular assessment and progress monitoring(see case study)
Where: classroom (one page)
5 How will you evaluate the student’s response to the intervention (how will you know if the intervention is working?regard to decoding skills)
Please see peer-review articles of this program on how to assessment. *there is an attachment called FAQ mentioned some assessment, or you can find others online, please cite properly (one page)
6 Further action/next steps
- closely monitoring to see the effectiveness, to see if more intensive instruction is needed, or the appropriateness of the selected materials and so on..(half page)

Intervention Plan in RTI Model for Student with Decoding Difficulties in Reading

Intervention Focus
The Response to Intervention (RTI) model is proposed for students with challenges in decoding and reading. In the RTI approach, there is close monitoring of student performance, differentiated classroom instruction, and intense interventions to promote learning for students lagging behind their peers (Robertson & Pfeiffer, 2016). Decoding is an essential skill in reading the correct pronunciation of words and identifying sounds that makeup words. The learners are expected to recognize words and the associated individual phonemes, sounds, and words in context. It is easier for learners to pronounce unfamiliar words when they have good decoding skills. Most children learn decoding in regular classroom instruction, but it takes longer in others. Children facing challenges decoding may have reading and learning problems matching letters to the sounds they make requires phoneme awareness. In the case study, this child failed to meet the criteria of the grade five standard and lags behind their peers.
Student Goal(s)
Decoding words using various forms of analysis requires awareness of phonics and word recognition. Therefore, the first goal is RF.5.3 “Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.” This is also supported by the goal RF.5.3a “Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.” The Response to Intervention (RTI) approach is used to aid learning to understand new or unfamiliar words better. It is aligned with the reading standards to improve John’s reading and spelling.
The students will be more familiar with dividing multisyllabic words so they can read and spell different words. Segmenting the words and then blending them back together while matching the words with the sound is a useful skill to learn in decoding. Parts of the words provide clues when decoding words. This is easier when they can identify the individual phonemes from words. There is an emphasis on improving the decoding and spelling skills to meet the goals. Developing word recognition, word analysis, and morphology is necessary to improve reading, writing, and spelling (Fisher & Frey, 2014). Phonological knowledge and skills are essential in improving word-decoding and being able to read grade-appropriate words.
One of the top priorities is improving John’s decoding skills to become a proficient reader and spell correctly. The intervention requires phonics assessment, where the intervention program is aligned with monitoring John’s progress in improving his phonics and decoding skills. Evaluating John’s needs and strengths as a student also informs the instruction process and intervention to improve phonological knowledge and skills, which is necessary for fluent word-decoding and fluent reading (Poh et al., 2020). John still faces difficulties forming sounds, reading, and spelling at an appropriate level, but he will be better p...
