Introduction
Mental health is the key to a healthy nation. Yet, many individuals either lack awareness of mental health issues or fail to ask for help due to fear of stigmatization. Mental health among college students has become a national priority, which is what sparked this research. Specifically, this research focuses on mental health and the prevention of suicide among college students. Keyes (n.d.) reveals that every year, about 1,100 deaths of students in college can be attributed to suicide. Also, more than 10% of college students have, at one point, considered committing suicide. These statistics are serious and they call for quick action not only from the public health administrators but also from the higher education administrators.
According to Wyatt, Oswalt, and Ochoa (2017), mental health issues not only affect the health of the student but also their academic progress because it interferes with college enrollment. When students are overwhelmed emotionally and mentally, they may experience depression, which affects their ability to function normally in a school year. Thus, they need some assistance in identifying ways in which they can enhance their mental health and stay in school as required.
Part of the responsibility of the higher education administrators, and leaders as well, is to create academic pathways that meet the needs of different students (Webber, 2016). However, creating pathways is not enough because students must also be in a position to follow those pathways uninterrupted, yet mental health issues get in the way of that. Higher education leadership is, therefore, responsible for ensuring continuous access to education and as such, any issues that interfere with this responsibility fall under the purview of higher education leadership and administration. As such, creating awareness on mental health and suicide prevention is such an important aspect of higher education leadership.
Statement of the Problem
Suicide is a public health issue that has escalated the need for intervention due to the high number of deaths associated with suicide. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) (2019), suicide is one of the major leading causes of death in the United States. Specifically, suicide is ranked as the second leading cause of death among Americans aged 15-24 and 25-34 with approximately 6, 252 and 7, 948 deaths, respectively. Most college students fall within the above age groups, making suicide the second leading cause of death among college students.
Also, the suicide prevalence rate is highest among individuals aged 18-25. The NIMH (2019) indicates that this age group has a prevalence rate of 10.5 percent, which is very high when compared to an overall national prevalence rate of 4.3 percent. Students are the future and as such, their mental health issues should be addressed to avoid a future crisis where a majority of the productive citizens are dealing with mental hea...
