JetBlue, a well-known low-cost domestic airline, has had its share of pleasant and blue days since its incorporation in 1998. Although the company had risen to greater heights and had even received a few prestigious awards in 2006, JetBlue was still confronted by issues that not only affected its performance in the industry but also its profitability. This paper details some of the major issues confronting the company, how these challenges came about, and courses of action that would address these issues.
Issues Confronting JetBlue
A rise in fuel prices caused an increase in JetBlue’s costs which made it difficult for the company to make profits and grow. Alongside other major costs, the increased fuel prices were the primary reason why the company recorded its first loss in 2005 since its inception. The ice storm that hit the company on the Valentines day of 2007 contributed to more losses by the company in the years that follow. Secondly, passengers observed a decline in the quality of flying experience that JetBlue was providing. Professor Lakshmi describes it as a “captive” flying experience rather than a captivating one. The airline had restyled the cabin in a manner that shrunk legroom primarily because more seats were added to the cabin. Consequently, passengers found this uncomfortable and tiresome during their flights. Thirdly, JetBlue Airlines has had major technical disruptions for a few years of its operation. The company often faced an outage of their company computer systems which caused problems in bookings and modification of existing reservations. Therefore, customers faced major delays with little chance of their issues being solved because the systems were broken. Such experiences were also a source of bad publicity for JetBlue.
