In the article written by Moore (1955) entitled Distribution of Blood Factors, ABO, MN, and Rh in a Group of American Negroes, the author noted that despite the significant studies done on the blood typing of different races during those times, much is yet to be discovered. Particularly, Moore cited previous studies done by Weiner, Belkins, and Sonn as well as that of Levine, who both studied the frequency of the blood type and Rh Factor groups in the city of New York. Accordingly, what made the author of this paper interested in this manuscript is its focus on improving the ‘representativeness’ of the blood typing results, particularly when it comes to African Americans (or “Negroes”) back in the days.
To conduct a study, Moore (1955) conducted a quantitative analysis of a limited group of African-American students enrolled in the Howard University School of Medicine. This gave an ample amount of room for the study to be conducted despite the limited number of the population. Each of the students was asked to provide blood samples with the use of finger puncture, and such samples were stored with dried oxalate. The results were also read immediately after the extraction using microscopic and macroscopic analysis and thereafter recorded for the purpose of data collection.
After the conduct of the study, the researchers found out similarities and differences with regards to the previous studies conducted among New Yorkers and the student population at Howard University. First, the Blood ABO Types show that African Americans have a higher tendency to be Blood Type O rather than Blood Type AB, which helps confirm previous studies. Second, the research findings are...
