Rising income inequality and racism are the most critical economic and societal matters in the United States. Since the late 1970s, income gains have been enjoyed by the wealthy while the poor and middle-class have seen their income decrease steadily. Although this trend is a source of concern, it would not be devastating if the education system leveled the playing field and enabled people to rise above their birth circumstances. In contrast, the US education system has numerous problems that reflect income inequality and vast differences between students of color and white students. As a result, despite the US spending more money on elementary and secondary education than other OECD nations, that money does not translate to better educational outcomes for all the students. Not only does education inequality condemn students of color to miserable conditions, it also reduces the nation’s total earnings. Currently, the impact of education inequality on the country’s revenues is more severe because the majority of current jobs require potential employees to have at least college or post-secondary education (Blanden, 2020).
To fully understand the relationship between education inequality and race and income inequality, the US Department of Education provides the following facts;
