The U.S. War with Mexico: A Brief History with Documents

Book Review Instructions:

Write a for/against paragraph (two overall) both supporting and then one challenging the statement above using the primary source documents from the U.S.-Mexico War document reader. Make sure each paragraph includes three pieces of evidence from the reader, each piece of evidence should be a primary source document (Ex: Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Walt Whitman, Diary of Susan Magoffin, etc.). Although the introduction to the reader is useful background information that will help you write the paragraph, the pieces of evidence must come from the primary source documents (each document counts as a piece of evidence). The final sentence in each paragraph must be a thesis sentence and assert your main argument supported by the evidence/documents. Relisting your evidence points is not considered a strong argument, rather, make an all encompassing argument that draws a larger conclusion based on the evidence. You will be graded for having a topic sentence, evidence point 1, evidence point 2, evidence point 3, and thesis sentence. Your grade will be based on addressing these points and longer paragraphs do not automatically get higher scores.
Use MLA style to cite the reader: (Chavez, page number)

Book Review
The U.S. War with Mexico: A Brief History with Documents is a book by Ernesto Chavez. It consists of chapters that highlight how the 1840s Mexican-American War was interpreted as a bald-faced adventure in conquest. Sometimes it is interpreted as the unfolding of Manifest Destiny in which the United States brings the blessings of liberty to benighted people belonging to the American Southwest (Chávez 15). A number of interpretations between and beyond the two poles can be noticed. Americans supported the U.S.-Mexico War because of their belief in Manifest Destiny.
Statement in Favor
It is not vague or unreasonable to state that the Americans declared war on Mexico due to their belief on the Manifest Destiny.
It was in the 1940s when the Americans had the idea of Manifest Destiny floating in their heads by following which they wanted to expand their territories from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. There were strong social, economic and political reasons behind this expansion. The violations by the Mexican troops at the disputed border of Texas threatened the peace and the sovereignty of the Americans on which president James Polk declared war on Mexico.
This controversial war lasted for two years before it ended on February 2, 1848, and under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo the Mexicans gave up (525,000 square miles of) the modern-day lands of Arizona, Nevada, Utah, California, Wyoming and Texas to Americans. Under the treaty, the Americans recognized the Rio Grande as the southern border of US-Mexico.
