Jack Hoban’s The Ethical Warrior: Values, Morals, and Ethics is a book that seeks to restore sanity in a world that appears to devalue some of the greatest attributes of humanity. In the book, Hoban does not take the approach of a ‘know-it-all’ but takes the reader on a journey. He takes an approach many authors ignore but, in the end, one feels like they are together with him and that what appeals to him appeals to oneself as well. The journey to understanding what an ethical warrior encompasses and what eventually became a book is filled with lessons from two people who helped Hoban understand the essence of life. These people are Robert Humphrey and Masaaki Hatsumi and their imprints of these two people are all over the book and Hoban makes this apparent.
One thing that stands out in the book is Hoban’s insistence on the importance of life. Reading the book reveals one thing: life is precious and needs to be protected. To Hoban, it should be difficult to take a life and not as easy as people have made it to be today. People have to rise above their issues and feelings towards each other in the name of preserving life. In one instance, Hoban asks, “if life is such a universal and obvious value, why do we humans kill and disrespect each other constantly?” (21). The essence of life needs to triumph over what some...
