Journal Entry 1: After Moche Returns – 4th of December 1941. 6 pm, Sighet.
Moche returns a few months after it was reported that he had been deported. His return, however, is marred by controversy as he narrates an unbelievable tale of how the German police took charge of his train. His stories, albeit too farfetched, have me fearing for the worst. What if Moche is telling the truth? What if the Germans are planning something sinister, and we have all made ourselves easy targets by dismissing Moche?
Journal Entry 2: Home – 9th December 1941, 2:45 pm, Sighet.
So, I talk to my father about Palestine and share my thoughts on relocating to a place where we can be in the company of other Jews. The truth is that I am afraid of the uncertainty of living close to Germany and having to worry about the possibility of a German invasion. My father does share my fear but is not as motivated as I am. Being with his own kind does not move him as much because it means having to start all over again, and now, not as a young man but with a family. I understand his view, but there still remains a strong conviction within me about the idea of moving.
Journal Entry 3: Nazis Occupy Hungary – 9th November 1944, 9 pm, Sighet.
My worst fears are confirmed, and Moche is vindicated but not in the way he would like. All of a sudden, we are at risk of extermination. My being a Jew happens to be the worst sin I ever committed as the Germans occupy my home. The hate that I develop towards the Germans is almost tangible as I try to find solace in the notion that one day we will be free. I am strong and I will keep fighting or so I thought.
Journal Entry 4: Journey to Birkenau – 23rd November 1944, 8:34 pm, Birkenau.
Everything that reminds me of what normal feels and looks like has to be done in darkness. The Germans are finding reasons to kill and arrest whoever they deem to be resisting their power. The journey to Birkenau is long, dreadful, and filled with enough cruelty that should last me the rest of my life. The Germans seem to have a deep hate for us and are eager to showcase it through whips, starvation, and killings. The cattle cars we used to travel are death traps that push people to their extremes.
