Homegoing is a debut novel written by Yaa Gyasi. The book is made up of a concoction of memories. It is about refusing to forget the past and finding out what has been lost when we happen to forget. The book depicts a family, which is disintegrated due to different circumstances. It compares migrating and being at home, the joys that never were and leads the reader back to places they have never been to but have always known that they exist. The novel carries a testament of black voices, depicting black suffering, strength, tears and black blood. The story illustrates slavery in the Americana south that affected two continents and more than seven generations of two African sisters from the Gold coast, current Ghana.
The book alternates between America and Africa through the chapters, its story begins with the birth of a child amidst a raging inferno that led to her stepmother hate her and her father to assume her presence. The baby, Effia, grows into a beautiful girl and her wicked aunt ensures she is married to a slave trader. As she tries to adapt to her...
