Reading Tess Lomax’s discussion on transgender people or whakawahine as they refer to it in Maori culture was enlightening. I was particularly taken aback by Lomax’s admission of having been sexually abused while young. As the author reveals, usually, many are against this as it is not likable, but the fact is that it is the truth. This makes up the first thing that I take from reading this article. Revealing one’s experiences, no matter how awful, can be empowering, especially when it helps others who have undergone or are undergoing the same.
