In chapter 10 of women and indigenous religions, Morna Macleod presents a compelling argument on complementarity, duality, and equilibrium, as seen in Mayan women's lives. Mayan women are highly indigenous people. They take great pride in their culture and traditions. However, as seen in Macleod (195), these women seek to have a sense of independence and self-worth.
Complementarity and duality is a serious topic, especially for Mayan women today. In western culture, people talk about equality and feminism to address deficiencies that women are subjected to. However, among Mayan women, complementarity and duality elements still factor even as they seek reduced subjugation of their women. As seen in Macleod (195), complementarity and duality are essential to Mayan women because they embody a larger concept referred to as a cosmovision.
I find it interesting when Macleod (198) begins to examine the concept of cosmovision and how it determines complementarity and duality in Mayan culture. Complementarity and duality are essential to Mayan women because they believe that one cannot function without nature's other offerings, including men. The women even provide testimonies that the author uses. For instance, Maria Estela provides a good explanation of how complementarity and duality works. She does so using the example of an interview. One cannot conduct an interview alone because it requires one person to ask the questions and another to provide the answers. It is a basic example of how complementarity and duality work in life.
