Introduction
George Orwell is ascribed as one of the greatest political writer of the 20th century. In 1984, several people believed that whatever the government orders or said remained true even when they were told lies. In the book 1984, since the beginning, propaganda has primarily been used as a means of having absolute control over the people. Parties in this case used several techniques and approaches with the sole objective of maintaining power. It is therefore important to consider that parties focused on destroying a majority of people’s confidence in regards to their common sense and the ability to make their own choices and decisions intelligently. This paper therefore seeks to conduct a study on George Orwell’s 1984 with the sole objective of determining the manner in which the party in 1984 controlled its people.

In 1984, the author warns his readers on the dangers of a totalitarian government. Having witnessed the horrific lengths in which totalitarian governments in Russia and Spain went through in a bid to sustain and increase their power, Orwell established measures aimed at alarming the Western world on approaches that gave rise to communism. According to George Orwell propaganda played an essential role. The author of the book 1984 defines propaganda as information that is biased in a way that promotes a political cause. Since telescreens were used in transmitting propaganda, citizens were feed on information driven towards confusing them, an aspect that incapacitated the citizens in formulating thoughts of rebellion against the then government. The manner in which the government in this futuredystopia kept control over its people was through a combination of manipulative approaches that instilled fear among the population. Partiers as established by George Orwell turned families against one another through propaganda that was directed at promoting and controlling citizens of a nation. The parties therefore ensured that their citizens were filled with confusion and propaganda to ensure that thoughts of rebellion were sustained. Propaganda was continually used in telescreens through news that was manipulated in order to ensure the government appeared effective and efficient. Additionally the government used this approach in evoking feelings of patriotism among the citizens.
