Character Analysis of George Milton.
George Milton is one of the main protagonists in the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Having taken a main role in the book, it seems practically impossible to have the story without such a character. Just like the rest of the characters in the book, he has an American dream of which he plans to achieve someday. He is a man of his words and this explains why he draws so much admiration. Examining his character traits brings forth the kind of person George was. Furthermore, it makes one understand why he took certain actions as portrayed in the book. Consequently, analyzing George’s character traits gives an in-depth of who he really was.
George is a cordial character. He has a friend, who is a true companion by the name of Lennie. George feels really special by having Lennie around. He does not feel lonely in the farm as other characters are portrayed. In chapter one George told Lennie, “With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.” Even though Lennie is not of sound mind, George still feels compassion for him. As a result of their friendship, George plans on securing land elsewhere where he and Lennie would grow their food and look after their livestock without the disturbance from the rest of the world. This dream of living together in their ranch is what keeps George focused in the farm (Steinbeck 7). Their friendship is one of a kind as it makes George shoot Lennie to have him die instantly as opposed to what Curley had planned, which was to ensure that Lennie dies a painful and slow death for having killed his wife.
