In the past centuries, most countries were ruled by totalitarian governments. Political authority exercised total control over all aspects of its citizens. Citizens were subordinated to the state, and any opposing views were suppressed. In 1984, a political novel by George Orwell warned the audience about the dangers of a totalitarian society. Orwell in his book paints a frightening but realistic picture of a totalitarian state.
In situations where a totalitarian rule is employed, the government controls all the aspect of its citizens limiting their freedom. Propaganda is used to convince people that hate is the appropriate response to people that opposes the government. Totalitarian and some of its consequences are illustrated by George Orwell throughout his book. This essay highlights some of the negative consequences of a totalitarian rule.

At the beginning of chapter ten, the author presents life and beauty whereby a woman hangs diapers on her cloth line. She is presented as a strong and beautiful person who holds the future. One the other hand Winston mediates on her probable fruitfulness imagining her family with so many children and grandchildren. Winston admires her; he starts to think about all the people held apart because of lies and hatred. He believes and hopes that the prole have the potential to change the world. Winston thinks that millions of people like the woman will eventually rise to form a new world because both him and Julia are dead. Winston believed that the proles “were storing up in their hearts and bellies and muscles the power that would one day overturn the world. If there was hope, it lay in the proles!” In the first parts of the chapter, pessimism turns into optimism, inequality is expressed in different ways, but Winston remains hopeful. He reflects upon birds singing and the woman singing outside the window giving hope for freedom. Winston recalls him suffering under the totalitarian regime, Orwell states that "Since he was arrested he had not been fed. He sat as still as he could on the narrow bench, with his hands crossed on his knee". If you made unexpected movements, they yelled at you from the telescreen."
Winston thinks over several unanswered questions, he envies the proles' energy and has hopes for the future. Both Julia and Winston are betrayed, their world comes crashing down on them.
