Deception in the World of Literature
In this world, the balance has been set by the same predisposition to good and evil. Decency has been the center of admiration, and it marks an individual’s reputation. By contrast, decadence has been demonstrated by the malevolent doings of the sinful, and it is characterized by one’s deviance and deception (Gaita). The balance between the good and the evil is not only evident in reality, but it is also distinct in literature. Various works of literature illustrated the difference between these two. In fact, the evil is better portrayed in the writings and plays, whether as a legitimate person or as a myth. The literary geniuses and playwrights in the past created notable characters who played these roles. The most beautiful plays and works of literature in history have splendidly portrayed and exemplified these concepts through the diversity in the characters’ personalities and objectives. This paper shall discuss the treachery represented by one of the most notable figures in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, Puck.
In essence, mischief and wickedness are two different entities but are deeply associated with one another. The former relates to troubles, misbehavior, and disobedience, while the latter refers to malevolence CITATION Difnd \l 13321 (DiffSense). Although these two concepts have different meanings, mischief may turn into iniquity when the individual succumbs to injustices.
One of the most notable characters in plays that depict mischief is the trickster. By definition, a trickster represents a deceitful individual who draws attention towards fraud and the use of tricks and illusions or, in simpler words, it relates to “game players CITATION Mernd \l 13321 (Merriam Webster).” Each trickster has unique characteristics, especially in creative stories like fairytales. Some tricksters are upright and honorable, while others are plainly evil and become the antagonist of the story. The common ground among tricksters is that all of them deviate from the rules of everyday behavior, resulting in the extreme discomfort inflicted on other people’s lives. They represent turmoil and capriciousness by implicating ingenuity and foolishness at the same time (Crawford).
