In “Hidden Intellectualism,” Graff raises a significant moral issue that I think warrants consideration in our education system. Society has categorized young people into “book smarts” and “street smarts.” Book smarts are considered successful in academic matters while street smarts are considered a liability in the classroom. Teachers and parents often assume that the two are incompatible. Graff uses his youthful life as an example to prove that intellectualism or un-intellectualism should not be the reason to deny intellectuals an opportunity to pursue their non-intellectual disciplines.
I agree with Graff’s argument and emphasis on allowing learners to pursue their non-academic interests. I think that this should be the role of teachers and parents. Graff writes “…it is not only to exploit student’s non-academic interests but to get them to see the interests through academic eyes… ” (64).
