After reading the article by clicking the link below, write a 2 - 3 page, double-spaced paper summarizing and discussing the article. Some of your paper should be used to summarize the article (enough that I can tell you read it), and some of your paper should be used to provide a thoughtful discussion of the article content. When you are summarizing, do not copy word for word from the article or you will be guilty of plagiarism, resulting in a failing grade. Summarize in your own words. Use a 12 font and 1 inch margins. In order to receive full credit, follow these format requirements: No margins (top, bottom, left, right) larger than 1 inch. Font no larger than 12. Double-space entire paper. There is a 48 grace period for submitting your papers. Article 2 Paper is worth 60 points.
Article 2 relates to Chapter 10, Stratification, and examines the too-common problem of Americans not having enough savings to retire. In fact, a recent report found that 40% of Americans are one missed paycheck away from poverty. Wages that have remained stagnant over the last several decades, combined with a rising cost-of-living, and employers who no longer provide retirement pensions have left many Americans unable to save for retirement. This article focuses on how America's elderly are increasingly unable to retire and have no choice but to continue to work. If you are unable to open the link to the first article (it asks you to sign in or subscribe) use the link to the second article for your paper. You do not have to subscribe to anything. Some students have been able to open the article with no trouble but other students are being asked to subscribe in order to read it. If this happens to you, use the second article.

The article outlines the high number of baby boomers that have to work to sustain their lives. These people have to work because some of them did not have well-paying jobs to make retirement savings. Others have to work because their employers did not offer them pension plans, and they have no money to use after retiring from their jobs. According to the article, one of the interviewees had to take a credit card debt to cover her expenses or get food from the church supplies. As people reach their mid-60s, they have to cut their expenses or look for employment to cater to their bills. Most seniors have transitioned from being near-poor to being poor because getting a well-paying job at their age is also a challenge. One of the interviewees gets paid $5 a day, which is not enough to cater to her rent. The article points out that the baby boomers were the only demographic that showed an increase in poverty levels from 2015 to 2016 (Sane). Such a rate represents a worrying trend that could befall a large number of aging Americans. It raises the question of what would become of the young generation if the seniors are already struggling with finances.
Given that many Americans do not have pension plans, the future economy is expected to have a high number of old people who are still working. Some of the employers do not offer Americans a pension plan that they could use at old age. Other Americans do not save enough retirement money before they get old.
