Queering Asian American Religious Studies
In this week's reading, I learnt some of the challenges faced by Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered Asian Americans. The cultural tussle between Chinese and American continue to be visible. It is true that the expression of identities is a theme echoed among immigrants reflected by the general experience of immigrants in America (Singh and Kirstyn 197).
Little is known about Chinese American, lesbians, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and intersex issues due to lack understanding about Chinese American views, assumption and the levels of acceptance of these groups. In an article by Chin-In, Chen, and Jonathan, Lee titled Chinese Americans and LGBTQQI; the authors present the racialized image of Chinese Americans (Lee and Chen 5).
According to the authors, Chinese Americans are heteronormative; they are required to conform to the mainstream discourse of being normal. Meaning that same-sex marriages are not recognized. Chinese Americans are expected to be conformists, very conservative, and LGBTQQI is not accepted (Lee and Chen 3).
The Chinese culture and nationality is ancient and is mostly influenced by traditional values and morals that cannot be separated from religion. That is why Chinese American cultures still emphasize on specific values that are passed down from one generation to the other. Such cultural notions have been doubly challenging to people who do not conform to the Chinese tradition (Chang 11).
According to the Chinese tradition, one is either feminine or masculine, intersex and homosexuality are foreign. Russell Leong notes that certain myths of conformity limit exploration of the varied nature of sexual drives and gender diversity because of the ancient pathologization of Chinese American (Holmlund 38).
