Immigration reform post-1965 and changing religious landscape
In this week’s study, I have learned a lot about Immigration reforms of post-1965 and the change in the religious landscape in the United States of America. Immigration reforms have been a central point of discussion for many years and have been attached closely to other civil and human rights of people, with the United States taking center stage CITATION Mar10 \p 220 \l 1033 (Martin, 2010, p. 220). The United States itself made legislation guidelines and amendments to accommodate refugees from different countries especially after the Cold War. For instance, the Migration and Refugee Assistance Act of 1962 had aspects for the provision of grants to the voluntary agencies that would be involved in settlement of Cubans. According to Martin (2010), the funds that the United States received greatly helped the immigrants receive health, social and education services and also financial assistance for people who were among the Cuban refugees. The continued war in different parts of the world like Vietnam and Cambodia in the year 1977 increased the number of immigrants seeking asylum in neighboring countries. This initiated a greater foreign policy and a bigger interest in the humanitarian aspects of the world. Thus, there was an introduction of the Refugee Act of 1980 which provided an organized mechanism for the movement of people freely within and without different countries to avoid loss of lives. These policies were aimed at changing the perceptions of immigrants and ensuring that their lives were safeguarded. The passing of these laws was a necessary factor for the survival and growth of the immigrants in the United States. This can be affirmed by the writings of Irene (1996) on the inclusion of religious beliefs and cultures of the immigrants into the American community.
