An individual’s values, roles, and identities are not based on instinct. Instead, these are honed in the society based on various circumstances related to culture or personal and interpersonal experiences. Thus, we do not have a single identity because it is flexible and can change based on circumstances.
Granfield (1991) wrote about the changes in the roles of the working-class law students who were mixed with the elite class in the Ivy League Law School in the East. Initially, the working-class students, whose majority of parents are employed with blue-collar jobs, identify themselves with their kins having the same situation. The majority enrolled in law school secondary to the injustices they witnessed and proudly stood up from rags to riches.
Often, people are inspired to reach a particular objective and sow values and characters that they hope will be reaped at the right time. It is especially true in the lower classes in society since these people experience the most significant inequalities. From the bottom, people start working, beginning with the minor steps, until these accumulate and become significant steps, which can help them climb the ladder of success. For example, an individual may start as a vendor in the streets and become a small grocery store owner, then a supermarket owner.
Trying to become somebody in life requires perseverance and determination, for the road is full of bumps, and there is never a straight road to success. From here, people face challenges that may or may not change their perspective forever. However, every bump molds the person into somebody else, and these small changes become a significant factor in forming an alternate moral compass.
