The United States was in the past a key sanctuary for foreign nationals seeking refuge, asylum, among other humanitarian relief. This has however changed dramatically in recent decades owing concerns over the safety of American Citizens. The 9/11 attack and a couple more terror attacks propelled these concerns further and several immigration restrictions have been suggested. Nonetheless, current immigration policies are skewed toward matters of national security.
In her article, Shoba S. Wadhia (2016) critically examined several factors surrounding immigration which has since been inclined to be a matter of national security. The author pointed out the executive, the legislature, and the states as the key players in restructuring the immigration policies to adequately address national security concerns. The changes proposed, however, have serious implications on the morality, feasibility, and legality as highlighted in the article. The article also establishes a positive correlation in the proposed reforms on the immigration policies and those that were ordained after the terror attack of 2001. Wadhia (2016) pointed out that the presidency and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are the key players in addressing security concerns of immigration. The article focuses mainly on President Obama and Trump to have been very influential on matters concerning immigration. President Obama seemed to have been lenient on other immigrants (Syrian refugees) while extremely tight on others particularly those from Central America. On the other hand, President Trump's major focus has been on Muslim immigrants and has made several proposals to bar Muslims from getting refuge in the United States.
The article further associated DHS on immigration matters based on their prioritization of the border security and the deportation of Central America illegal immigrants as well as the enforcement of the numerous restrictions enacted by Congress which represents the legislative arm of government.
