Nik Heynen, Hilda Kurtz, and Amy Trauger’s article titled: “Food Justice, Hunger and the City” address how several factors can be manipulated to promote access of healthy foods and reduce hunger, especially in urban cities. The article indicates that food inequality is enhanced by overproduction of certain commodities which can discourage farmers, especially small-scale farmers. The article further points out to how food justice can be facilitated through food access and sovereignty. This is because food access ensures that people can produce and consume healthy foods while sovereignty ensures that they have a right to determine their food systems. The article also alludes that community food security can help address the issue of food insecurity by enhancing food production sustainability by connecting producers and consumers locally. The authors further point out to the concept of urban agriculture, which involves bridging the gap between producers and consumers, while at the same time giving consumers control of the food production system.
The idea that is projected in the article that food insecurity leads to both hunger and obesity seems to be a geographical one, or at least, one based on the per capita income. While it is true that in developed countries food insecurities as a result of poverty have led to increased obesity, the same is not true in developing countries. I think that food insecurities in developing countries as a result of poverty has the opposite effect because people do not become obese. In contrary, rich people in developing countries are more prone to obesity than poor people, as indicated by Dinsa, Goryakin, Fumagalli, and Suhrcke (2012). However, the text points...
