On October 6, 2018, Stony Brook University, West Campus, hosted a thrilling music concert. The primary aim of these performances was to showcase global talents for music majors. Held at Staller Center - Main Stage, the performances featured Hosted by Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra’s blossoming musicians with a collection of rare musical combos. This offered me the perfect opportunity for me to experience various varieties of music (Benson, 2015). However, the concert was not all about the music, Michael Hershkowitz’s informative lectures were important. The atmosphere of the area was also crucial. Although the hall was full, the atmosphere still felt calm and relaxing. We could feel pleasantness about the entire performance.
The first performance was about Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird. Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra delivered a strong performance which included some beautiful elements most of which featured wind, especially flutes. Other elements used included clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, piano, and strings (Myers, nd.). This performance enabled us to listen to beautiful natural elements that mirrored sounds of birds. With the presence of a lighter atmosphere, a short, quick change occurred at the stage to introduce a piano to the center the performance. The audience seemed to enjoy this because it was somewhat more straightforward to hear and dissect the music (Morgenstern, 2017). The Firebird performance evoked bucolic elements (Stravinsky, 1910). It also provided a journey through fairy-tale and showed sequences that elicit the mawkishness of love. With a dramatic finale, this orchestra came to live through a big sound that brought about images of a bird taking over to portray the beauty and strength of nature
The second performance was Chen Yi’s Percussion Concerto. It was good to hear music from Chinese composers. Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra naturally deployed some battery of percussion instruments (Yi, 2002). This time, there were fairly some standard Western instruments in the mix.
