Introduction
An article critique is designed to evaluate the details of the article to understand if the bases and hypotheses are valid and testable for the latter and comprehend the applicability of the results of the study. In this paper, we shall critique Wahlström et al.’s (2019) research paper entitled, “MediYoga as a part of a self-management programme among patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation – a randomized study.” Generally, the article supports MediYoga as an alternative management for the said disease and can be used as an adjunct self-management intervention. This paper reviews the abstract, introduction, methodology, results, discussion, and implications in advanced practice nursing and future research projects.
Appropriateness of the Title
Based on the PICOT format, the study’s title was incomplete and gave a vague clue about its study design. The persons of interest (P) are patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, the intervention (I) is MediYoga, there is no explicit comparison (C), the outcome (O) is the effectiveness of MediYoga as a self-management program, and the time frame (T) was not also mentioned. It contains three critical elements of a PICOT question that must be evident as the reader goes through the title. Moreover, the title contains “a randomized study,” which only pertains to randomization and does not point out a controlled trial. This is critical since there are studies where the participants were randomized, but the circumstances were uncontrolled (Polit & Beck, 2010).
Review of the Abstract
The abstract provided a brief overview of the whole study. It was complete, containing a brief introduction, a methodology that includes the number of participants, a results section that briefly discussed the data from the Short-Form Health Survey, and other factors such as the diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR), and N-terminal proB-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels (Wahlström et al., 2019). The brief introduction only explained two concepts, including paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and yoga. However, there is no mention of the knowledge gap, which will help establish a proper objective of the study (Polit & Beck, 2010). Nevertheless, the other parts were accurate, and the presentation of the information was organized and easily understandable.
Review of the Introduction
Problem Statement
The problem statement can be found at the beginning of the paragraph, explaining paroxysmal atrial fibrillations, their implications, and associated factors. Specifically, the issue was directed to the challenges the patients suffer from their condition, including its adverse effects on their livelihood (Wahlström et al., 2019). This statement was concise and coherent, and the reader can readily identify the root cause of the problem. It drove the paper’s agenda and instigated its significance.
