Marijuana and Breastfeeding
Introduction
The main purpose of the article was to find out the influence of breastfeeding and the infant’s social environment on neuroplasticity and brain development in the first 1000 days (Shafai et al., 2017). Over the years, scientists have tried to unearth the relationship between a child’s neuroplasticity and brain development and the child's breastfeeding and social environment. Several existing research literatures show that a conducive social environment coupled with an excellent breastfeeding pattern can be helpful to the development of a child. In essence, these children have been proven to be somewhat better than their counterparts who did not have such privileges. There has been a particular focus on how breastfeeding for one year or longer can impact a child's intelligence as they grow older (Shafai et al., 2017). Scientists have also paid close attention to the relationship between breastfed infants, higher IQ, larger brain, and a higher degree of myelination of the white matter.
Methods
Results of magnetic imaging have sufficiently shown that these aspects are interlinked. In the same vein, several studies have led to the conclusion that sufficiently breastfed children have a higher IQ, are more intelligent, and the intelligence persists throughout their later stages of life. It is on these grounds that Shafai et al. (2017) provide evidence that "breastfeeding and an enriched environment results in accelerated developmental potentials in the first 1000 days last a lifetime." This research adds to the numerous ones that have been carried out in the past to buttress the fact that breastfeeding is immensely beneficial to an infant’s brain development. I agree with the author’s rationale because he has given an in-depth account of the context and where their motivation for the study comes from. It is from the results of the research the researchers have mentioned that they find it necessary to expound on the usefulness of breastfeeding on the development of a child’s brain.
The research used quantitative methods to come up with the results and findings of the research. The subjects were infants who were being seen by a qualified pediatrician. They were seen between the intervals of 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 24 months. Their parents were asked to give responses to questions in an evaluation form, the results of which were discussed between the parents and the provider. The evaluation was aimed at identifying the infants that needed further attention and needed to be referred for further evaluation and treatment. The evaluation form was the tool that the researchers used to record the performance of the child against their age.
