Ubelacker’s article highlights the opinions of Canadian people regarding the impact of smoking e-cigarettes. Using statistics from various organizations, the author concludes that the majority of Canadians are concerned about young people smoking e-cigarettes. The author has used credible sources while citing these statistics of the use of e-cigarettes. The author takes a particular stand that supports the evidence that continuous use of e-cigarettes is likely to have adverse effects especially to young smokers who are likely to transition to smoking cigarettes.
The author uses quantifiable facts to support the ideas presented throughout the article. For instance, by stating that 90 percent of Canadians support the banning of vaping products for those below 18 years, Ubelacker cites the findings of the national survey conducted by Angus Reid Institute (Ubelacker, 2018, para. 1 & 2). The author’s finding of the conclusion also cuts across all gender and age demographics suggesting the overwhelming support of the article’s position. The author also reports that 1,500 adults were involved in the research indicating the credibility of the findings collected by Angus Reid Institute (Ubelacker, 2018, para. 4). With that sample of the population, the conclusions arrived at by the author are factual and credible.
Apart from reporting the concerns of Canadians regarding their opinions on vaping by minors, the author also queries other findings that equally relates to the use of e-cigarettes and their effects to the general population. For instance, the author points out that there is universal support for both government regulation on packaging and labeling and promotion and marketing of vaping products (Ubelacker, 2018, para. 4). Interestingly, the author notes a disparity in opinion when it comes to supporting or opposing a ban on flavored liquids used in e-cigarettes. An older generation of 55+-year-olds supports the ban at 58 percent whereas on 33 percent of those aged between 18 and 34 years supported the ban. The author links this disparity on e-cigarette flavors to the increased vaping among the young people.
The author also uses multiple viewpoints to arrive the conclusions made in the article. For instance, in addition to the national survey by Angus Reid Institute, the article also makes reference to Health Canada that reported the increase in the use of e-cigarettes products (Ubelacker, 2018, para. 9). Additionally, the article refers to other sources such as David Hammond, a tobacco control ...
