Data collection instruments
In the study A Multidisciplinary Intubation Algorithm for Suspected COVID-19 Patients in the Emergency Department by Trembley et al (2020), the main instrument used in data collection was an online survey questionnaire hosted on research website SurveyMonkey.
The Questionnaire was partly quantitative, meaning it was designed for the collection of measurable data that could undergo statistical analysis for the production of descriptive and inferential results. The first seven questions were closed ended based on a five point Likert scale with answers ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. A final eight question was qualitative and open ended, asking respondents for feedback about the experiment and seeking suggestions. The qualitative question was for non-measurable data that the respondents could provide in response to their unique observations the researchers may have missed.
The researchers do not mention whether they conducted a reliability and validity test on the data collection instruments prior to the study in a pilot test. Hence, it is impossible to know whether the questions they included were robust with respect to the objectives of the study. The results of a pilot study were therefore unavailable in the study.
Conclusion
The researchers demonstrated that a multidisciplinary approach to the formulation of an intubation algorithm for Covid-19 patients, which incorporates rapid-cycle improvement methods is effective in handling rapidly changing clinical outcomes during pandemics. This showed that handling Covid-19 patients is better done when healthcare providers work as a team to deal with each case rather than as isolated in...
