Napping On the Night Shift Name Institution Taking care of patients is a 24-hour commitment as patients do not get choose when to get sick or recover. This means we have to have medical personnel at our hospitals all the time. The economy and environment in the world today has so many pressures, leisure and pleasures that if one does not plan and have a schedule sleeping time there is the threat of sleeping on the job literally or end up fatigued when at work. In our hospitals' nurses who find themselves on night shift often do experience this challenge and have high levels of sleepiness. To avoid complications or losing workers due to safety concerns, napping has been introduced in most safety sensitive organization and firms to countermeasure fatigue and sleepiness. The same need to be done in our hospitals especially to the night shift nurses. This paper is going to analyze George Brown et al. article "Napping on the Night Shift" and give a conclusion on the topic. The purpose of the study was to assess the existing barriers to successful incorporation of night shift naps and give results of the nurses who do take naps during night shifts. The study used a two-way hospital application plan, where six nursing units were given by the leadership for them to you undertake to nap on the night shift. One hospital was a 380-bed capacity community hospital, and the other one was a 313-bed children health facility. With the approval of the unit nurse manager, the nurses were given further instructions. A form containing the Karolinska Sleeping Scale, with nap experience details was used to assess the nurses before nap, during the nap and perceived sleep, post-nap and the perceived helpfulness of the nap. The nurse managers were also included in the interview at the end of the three months of exercise. Data collection was conducted in February 2012 and May 2013 while interviews were conducted in February 2014. A single page document with nap experience was given to napping night shift nurses, and they filled in each time they took a nap. In the form, they filled time, duration, sleepiness rate, ability to sleep, sleep inertia after the nap and how helpful the nap was, this method was appropriate because the information was coming from the subject itself, hence less unlikely to give force information. To maintain the anonymity of the subjects, the method did not collect demographic data. Demographic data could have added value as women and men tend to behave differently.
