Introduction
A critique of an article or research is conducted for various reasons. Firstly makes the work’s subject area known to us. It also gives us an understanding of the purpose of the work and authors' intended audience. It sometimes works as a basis of recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of the work in question. The study at hand is a case study of patient interaction, provision of care and the effects of emotions on caregivers as they offer their services. Written by Maggi Banning and Virginia Gumley published on July 28th, 2013. This study was conducted in the only regional cancer center in Pakistan. The writers' main aim was to show how emotionally involved nurses become in their line of duty as they interact with their patients. In my evaluation I will not focus on one side rather I will focus on both the weakness and the strengths.
Purpose
From the introduction, the author dwells mainly on care and nurses as caregivers. They describe care is a unique way in which comfort and affection are given to individuals which in return alleviates human suffering. A nurse poses the ability to recognize and appreciate the subjective experiences and torment that a person may be experiencing. They should show empathy, but still adhere to the work ethics, not letting their emotions affect their work. A recent review of the concept of caring has led to three perspectives of caring: these are the graduate nurses, the general public and nursing students
The introduction is detailed which is good, because the reader gets to understand the concept of care. The three perspectives, its purpose, and how nurses act as caregivers. At the same time, the introduction dwells mostly on nurse’s side. If the readers were to quickly check without reading the heading, they would assume it's a case study on caregiving only.
Method
Thematic analysis is one of the methods used in the qualitative reference it is conducted systematically, but focuses on the identification, analysis, and reporting of themes within the data. Using this approach, the researcher succeeded to capture the unique experiences, perceptions, and opinions of nurses, on the impacts of emotion about their role as caregivers and they also talked about the emotion management strategies they employ.
Considering that this was a qualitative study, thematic analysis was the most ideal option since it offers a great design for the whole research process.
Sampling
The study was performed in a 100-bed regional cancer hospital. The nursing staff of the hospital was the participants of the research. This research was after a local advertising and a talk with the hospital nursing leaders and getting an okay from them. A sample of 32 nurses was used for this study. The participants had to be of age between 22-58, both genders nursing experience in different clinical areas. Have at list 2-30 years of experience.
The sampling was the method used, considering that it is a 100-bed hospital, 32 nurses participated in the study can be considered as a large sample for a qualitative study to a large sample of the patients admitted there, hence the information gathered would be enough to make an honest conclusion…&he...
