Natalie Angier asserts that anything that resembles an ordinary family in America is long gone. Complex portraits of the new norm have since replaced the old concepts of the female homemaker and the male breadwinner. Families now reflect new cultural, social, and demographic realities, as well as widening economic disparities and increased diversity. Marriage has undergone rapid and significant change, making many questions its role as the dominant social institution.
The birth rate in America has shifted from how it was in the fifties. The number of women giving birth has reduced to a record low. Additionally, adoption has been a case on the rise. We can question the bond between parents and their adopted children and compare it to that between parents and their children. The author also mentions the rise of professional women who chose to have children through donor sperm instead of having husbands. The paper is crucial to this topic because it explains our society's contemporary problems that affect families. Americans are bringing a new definition to marriage and families, affecting the original norms in families.
