Single Case Research Design (SCRD) Study: Differential Reinforcement Without Extinction

Annotated Bibliography Instructions:

SCRD Poster Presentation
This assignment is an excellent opportunity to learn several important skills as an ABA Scientist-Practitioner. First, you will design an evidence-based research study as it applies to a problem behavior for a client. Then, you will create a poster presentation of your completed study. Finally, you will use Kaltura Capture to create a video presentation that further discusses the poster and the SCRD that you designed. This is an excellent skill to learn as you enter the field of ABA and attend or participate in conferences for professional development.
Assignment Directions
For this assignment, you will construct a hypothetical (or actual) single case research design (SCRD) study that will be used to create a scholarly poster presentation. Choose one of the scenario options to construct your SCRD and use the Unit 9 Assignment Planning Template to organize the elements for your study. Alternatively, you may use a client you are currently working with; however, be sure that has been discussed with your instructor by the end of Unit 3 so that you can get specific guidance on the process.
Begin by conducting research and finding at least three peer-reviewed academic sources that provide an evidence-based analysis of the specific intervention that will be used to support the target behavior that you will focus on for your client. Then, use the Unit 9 Assignment Template to build your poster presentation and use Kaltura Capture to record a 3–5-minute video presentation of your poster. Please read the assignment requirements for details on the guidelines and expectations.
Please include the following:
Study Title
Provide a title for your study that reflects the dependent/independent variables and the subjects. For example: Use of Non-Contingent Reinforcement on the Perpetual Squawking of a Parrot with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Introduction
Provide a rationale as to why you chose this study, based on the literature that you reviewed. What makes your study a unique contribution to the field?
Include your research statement phrased as: “The purpose of this study is to….”
Be sure that it is clear as to what your study is looking to investigate or prove, and that both the independent and dependent variables in your research statement.
Methods/Materials
Include information on the participant(s), setting(s), materials, dependent variable, and procedures used in your study. Be sure to identify the research design you selected.
Results
Include a graphical representation of the data (hypothetical for the case study or actual if you are using a client) that meets ABA conventions for the selected graph(s).
Do NOT copy and paste any data or graphs from alternate sources.
Provide a brief summary of the results.
Discussion
Summarize the effectiveness and discuss the limitations of your study.
Consider the pros and cons of the research design, the number of participants, the lack of generality, etc.
In addition to the Poster Presentation, you will submit a brief paper (5-7 pages) to further discuss the SCRD that you designed. Your original paper should include the following:
Title Page
Annotated Bibliography of the three articles.
Include a brief description of the research question(s) and hypothesis as well as the method, setting, subjects, and research design used. Be sure your annotated bibliograph provides a summary of the results and the conclusions as reported by the author(s) of the study.
Rationale of why the chosen design is appropriate for the study.
Assessment of the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of the chosen research design.
Discussion of reliability and validity of the
A graphical representation of the data used for the study, followed by your own visual analysis of data to include:
A summary of the within and between condition effects of the research design.
A comparison of level, trend, and immediacy of effect.
Calculations that identify variability or stability of data within a condition.
A discussion of the split middle line of progress to determine trend and the Percentage of Non-overlapping Data (PND).
Assignment Guidelines
The written portion of your assignment should be 5-7 pages, not including the title and reference pages, and should include the following elements:
Title Page: Provide the assignment title, your name, course and section number, instructor name, and date.
Body: Include an introductory and a concluding paragraph. Answer all the questions in complete sentences and paragraphs, using appropriate personal and professional insights.
The assignment must be written in Standard English and demonstrate superior organization, including a highly developed viewpoint and purpose that is clearly established and sustained. The communication of your thoughts must be highly ordered, logical, and unified, displaying exceptional content, organization, style, and mechanics (including the use of correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure).
Your responses should meet professional writing standards, using proper tone and language. The writing and writing style should be correct and accurate and reflect knowledge of applied behavior analysis.
Reference Page: Sources listed in APA format.
Include a minimum of three scholarly peer-reviewed sources to support your responses and conclusions.
Use Arial or Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced and left aligned.
Use standard 1" margins on all sides.
Use current APA formatting and citation style.
If you need assistance with APA style, please visit the Academic Writer.
Video Recording
The video recording should be in Standard English and communicate clear and logical information to the audience. Please aim to keep your video file between 3-5 minutes and use the Kaltura Capture tool to create your video presentation, recording yourself and your content simultaneously. Please refer to the “Kaltura Help Resources for Students” section found under the “Help” menu in the top navigation of your course. This provides helpful guides and videos to prepare you for using the tool.
Be sure to convey a professional tone throughout your video that can easily be understood. Use clear enunciations and minimize any background noises or interference. Your video should also include professional insights, displaying proper word choice, oral expressiveness, exceptional content, organization, and style, leading your audience to a dynamic and supported conclusion. The communication of your thoughts must be highly ordered, logical, and unified. The recording should not be read, though you can write it down and practice it. Additionally, please use the Speaking Effectively and Professional Video Presentation Tips resources for help with preparing for your video presentation.
This assignment assesses the following Course Outcomes:
PS561-3: Conduct a comprehensive visual analysis of a single case research design graph.
PS561-4: Defend the selection of a single case research design in a given real-world setting.
PC-3.4: Project a professional image, such as appearance, confidence, and attitude, for a given work environment.

Unit 9 Planning Template
Use this guide to plan the information needed to include in your Poster Presentation. This is only for your personal use and does not need to be submitted.
1 Provide an Annotated Biography of three articles that support the evidence base of your study. Read the article and provide a 2-paragraph summary for each that includes:
1 A brief description of the research question(s) and hypothesis
2 The method, setting, and subjects, research design
3 A summary of the results
4 The conclusions as reported by the study author
Article 1:
Trump, C. E., Ayres, K. M., Quinland, K. K., & Zabala, K. A. (2020). Differential reinforcement without extinction: A review of the literature. Behavior Analysis: Research and Practice, 20(2), 94–107. https://doi.org/10.1037/bar0000169 The research question of this study focused on the efficacy of interventions using Differential Reinforcement without Extinction (DRA) in reducing problem behavior and increasing appropriate behavior. The authors aimed to investigate various aspects of this intervention and assess its impact on human participants. The method involved searching multiple databases and examining peer-reviewed academic journal articles in English. The research design employed single-case research designs to evaluate the treatment effects, explicitly focusing on DRA without extinction. The study found that DRA interventions varied in effectiveness. About 36% of experiments showed positive effects, but only 16 met high-quality standards. This suggests that DRA without extinction can work for some problem behaviors, especially when appropriate behavior is reinforced favorably. However, many experiments needed more high-quality evidence due to missing procedural fidelity, unclear variable descriptions, and a lack of social validity measures. The study's conclusions stress manipulating reinforcement schedules in concurrent settings to reduce problem behavior and achieve desired response allocation. Aligning reinforcement parameters to make appropriate behavior more favorable leads to positive results hence the authors urge practitioners to include participant input, enhancing social validity.Trump, C.
