In this source, the effects of divorce on children are discussed in depth. First, the article recognizes the difficulty of the entire process of divorce to a family. Then it offers a discussion of the many effects of the process on children. It acknowledges that these effects could vary depending on the children’s ages as well. Some of the obvious effects it alludes to include a decrease in academic performance. The interruption divorce causes could indeed impact children’s focus, thus, impeding their performance. Other effects identified include the loss of interest in social activity, difficulty adapting to change, being emotionally sensitive, increased irritability, feelings of guilt, introduction of destructive behavior, increased health problems, and the loss of trust and respect in the institution of marriage.

In this source, Feuerman focuses on the predictors of divorce, as has been proven by research. She bases her article on research done by Drs. John and Julie Gottman who identified the four predictors as criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. On criticism, she writes that it should not be targeted or be done to imply something is wrong with someone. While discussing contempt, she notes that behaviors such as mockery and name-calling can indeed lead to divorce. Defensiveness mainly involves the idea of refusing to take responsibility for one’s actions, with stonewalling being a popular strategy of avoiding conflict by refusing to communicate. These factors form a big part of the study of divorce and how they keep happening. Therefore, it is a crucial source for any divorce paper.
