From May 25 to September 17, 1787, the constitutional convention in Philadelphia is one of the most historical events in America. The main aim of the convention was to revise the Articles of Confederation that governed the country. It was time for the country to forge ahead by finding solutions to the challenges they faced. The dialogue was the obvious choice of action, and therefore, more than 50 delegates from the union converged to lay their opinions and ensure they were part of the revision. Each delegate had personal interests in the meeting, and compromises were to be reached with the primary goal of maintaining unity and ensuring development was spurred. Notes were taken by Thomas Jefferson paint a clear picture of the events and the extent of discussions discussed. They offer a reference point, and they have been included in worldwide historical studies. However, another side of the event that the article titled 'The Witch and We, The People' by Edmund S. Morgan gives a different account of events. They occurred outside the old statehouse in Philadelphia, and they help to unravel the conditions of the Philadelphia state.
The article is written in two phases; one phase is depicting Philadelphia's deplorable state and why it was chosen as a meeting point for the delegates. The other phase retells the people's behavior, the role of the judicial and prison system, and the beliefs that people had about the topic of witchcraft (Edmund, 1983). This article takes us from the main event, and although the happenings in the city seemed trivial to the ones in the hall, they paint a clear picture of the entire nation. It also relates to the type of notions among the citizens, and although the writers strived to remain bias, the painted picture is one of backwardness and moral decay. At the end of the article, there are questions in the reader's mind. Why did the outside event seem irrelevant to the convention, why did neither of the attending leaders mention it anywhere.
